Here's a site teaching how to make Amigurumi. There are video how tos for stitches. http://www.hookandneedles.com/tutorials/

I actually learned the basic stitches at school. And then I got interested in Amigurumis and watched her videos. No, you wouldn't need much. Just a hook and a yarn. Oh, and patience too.

Good luck ;)

i was lucky enough to have my grandma teach me the basics. when it come to reading patterns though...i'm just no good. it might as well be written in Chinese! so i learned a lot from youtube...it made it easer for me to see and hear what was going on.

my favorite is http://www.youtube.com/user/tjw1963 and http://www.youtube.com/user/tjw1963 they are the same person...just two diff. channels. she also has a blog if you want to see the patterns written as well.

good luck!

i got the klutz book to teach me
http://www.amazon.com/Crochet-Learn-Great-Projects-Klutz/dp/1570548706
(after someone on here recommended it!)

you get some practise yarn, a hook, stitch markers and yarn needle with it too and i found it really easy to use (even being left handed!) and there are a few little projects to try when you've mastered the stitches.

Since then i've bought a set of hooks from amazon for £4 for 10 Happy

also once you've learnt i'd suggest signing up to ravelry.com as there's loads of patterns on there for free! x

I'd suggest hook and needles as well. it refreshed my memory (my granny taught me) and taught me how to read patterns.
