Crochet

I've just discovered crochet. I've been trying to do a circle but it keeps coming out like a hat for my thumb. It looks nice and neat but not really what I was going for. Any suggestions where I'm going wrong? Also any ideas for simple projects?

GO TO ASK.COM AND PUT IN THE SEARCH BOX FREE EASY CROCHET PATTERNS. YOU'LL FIND BUNCHES OF EM! AND AS FOR MAKING AS CIRCLE, YOU PROBABLY JUST HAVE TO DO SOME INCREASES. ID START OUT WITH A CH2. THEN DO 6 SC IN THE SECOND CH FROM HOOK, JOIN WITH A SLIP STITCH IN THE FIRST SC. NOW, CH 1. WORK 2 SC IN EACH SC AROUND. JOIN WITH SLIP STITCH. U KINDA JUST HAVE TO MESS WITH IT. U MAY BE ABLE TO DO 2 IN EACH ST FOR A FEW ROUNDS. BUT EVENTUALLY IT WILL START TO RUFFLE ON YOU. HOW BIG DO YOU WANT YOUR CIRCLE? I CAN MESS WITH MY YARN AND MAKE YOU A PATTERN IF YOU WANT ME TO. LET ME KNO.

Thank you. I don't think I was increasing, well initially I think I was and then forgot :/ Probably went to cook dinner of something. I need to get the hang of the short hand used in patterns too. It took me a while with knitting.

There are a couple of ways to start a circle, either by chaining or making a magic circle. Try youtube.com for video references. I usually watch Teresa who has very good tutorials for different things. Hope this helps...http://www.youtube.com/user/tjw1963
and good luck.

I didn't even occur to me to check you tube. Thanks. That will get me past the bit of understanding the shorthand.

When you've been online for as long as I have, you know where to get good resources for a lot of things. I learned how to do tons of stuff from googling, it's my homepage cuz I use it so much. Youtube is next in line for getting info especially when you need to see how it's actually done.

I've been watching some of the You Tube stuff you recommended - wow, thats not a crochet hook she's using its a magic wand Happy She makes it look so easy but I'm chuffed to see she starts right from the basics.

Glad it was of some help to you Arty. I was kinda mad with myself when I finally found out how to make a granny square cuz it's actually very easy and I'm almost finished with a blanket I started a few days ago. I will post it here when it's finished if not before.

Uploaded my first crochet creation so it should appear tomorrow Happy Its a crocheted hat. It was a bit of silliness as I'd crocheted a couple of tiny squares and needed an actual project to try and my boyfriend suggested a hat so that's what I did. I didn't follow any pattern, I just made it up as I went along. I'm a definite convert to crochet though so thanks both of you for the tips and advice Happy

No problem, can't wait to see your hat!! I'm crocheting a granny square blanket at the moment and I think I'm about done with it. I'm anxious to start a new one. It's not very big and it's a trial thing, so it's actually gonna be a throw. Learning to do it was easier thought. Will post it when it's completed ^_^
