Chicken wire and papier maché

Hi guys, I am creating some ram horns using a chicken wire frame and papier maché, but I'm having problems getting a smooth surface (the chicken wire texture just won't go away!)
Does anyone have any tips on how to rectify this, I can easily start over.

You may need thicker papier mache. When it's thick enough, you should be able to sand away the texture of the chicken wire using sandpaper.

maybe use some plaster wrap? (surgical supplies stores) dries really hard, easily draped.

I've only ever used plaster. But i remember when covering wire, you have to make sure to pull the strips tight across the wire on the first few layers, so it won't show as much. ...don't know if that works for paper tho.
