How to make a crown?

I want to make my friend a crown for her birthday, it's not until the beginning of January but I had the idea today so I wanted to ask now and get as much help as possible. All the how-tos I've looked at show you how to make a more basic paper tiara kind of thing - and I want to make something more sophisticated, like what the queen wears - although probably not that elaborate. Any ideas on how to make it?

Poster board, cut out in the shape of the crown (i.e. the shiny parts in the picture)
For the top part, I recommend a styrofoam ball (available at most craft stores) and some foam core or thick cardboard for the cross.
Paint it all a color similar the whatever the fabric of the crown will be. Then you can either use ; Hot glue and seed beads, and jewels to create the effect; or paint and stenciling.
For the inside, fabric parts, some velvet looking fabric is a must. Make an inside puff hat, and superglue that to the inside of the crown. Then, take fur trip, and superglue that on. If you'd rather sew than superglue, be my guest, but the trim is a pain to sew on, and sewing velvet fabric onto poster board really sucks.

Great thankyou!
I was also thinking of making it miniature, and attaching it to a headband?
