If you want to go the cheap route ...Permanent markers are perfect. I've always used them, and they stay on for a REALLY long time.
And if they ever do fade or anything, you can just color over them again...thats what i usually do.

id figure maybe fabric markers, because permanent markers would smudge if they got wet, no?

the beauty of PERMANENT markers (like sharpies, etc.) is that they defy water. Happy

Permanent markers never smudge on me ....they just fade slowly over time.

If you want fabric markers, i just bought a cheap pack at walmart for $10 w/ 6 different colors in it. Im using them to make t-shirts. Happy first time, so idk how long they last. I'm guessing a long time.
If u use fabric Paint, their usually $1 something for 1 mini bottle at walmart. But it'll leave texture, and could get messy cuz it takes a while to dry. I'm guessing thatll last a really long time too.

I've used Tulip fabric paints before in the little tubes, comes in; Glossy, Pearl, Glitter, Neon and most of them are 3D if you're after that effect? Never tried markers, but from what the others are saying it's worth a go...
