Cook Lemongrass Five Spice Seitan in #ABiteToEat with The Cinnamon Snail in New York.
How did you get started?
Started as a food truck in 2010. We were the first organic vegan food truck in the country and became sorta a cult favorite, and a super busy food truck! Eventually we opened up two restaurants, one in The Pennsy food hall on33rd/7th and one in City Acres Market on the corner of Cedar/pearl. Both in Manhattan
Where are you located?
Our restaurants are in The Pennsy food hall on33rd/7th and one in City Acres Market on the corner of Cedar/pearl. Both in Manhattan.
Our food truck visits the Red Bank NJ farmers market and lots of random events and vegfests and whatnot.
What are your specialities?
All vegan crazy food for crazy people, lizard men, rainbow unicorn princesses and Wild West rollerblade rappers. A few of our most popular items are:
Beastmode Burger Deluxe
Bourbon bbq smothered seitan burger with jalapeno mac n cheese, smoked chili coconut bacon and arugula on a grilled pretzel bun
Maple Mustard Tempeh
With marinated kale, onion, tomato and roasted garlic aioli on grilled spelt bread
Gochujang Glazed Crispy Seitan
With kimchi, pickled red onions, arugula and sriracha mayo on a grilled pretzel bun
We are also really well known for our award winning donuts, including
Vanilla bourbon creme brûlée donuts, chocolate ganache stuffed smokers donuts, and raspberry cheesecake donuts.
What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?
I really love our lemongrass 5 spice seitan, with curried cashews, Szechuan chili sauce, baby arugula and wasabi mayo on a grilled baguette. On our food truck we also serve blue corn pancakes with Vermont maple syrup and pine nut butter. Those melt my heart something fierce!
What's on the stereo?
Unfortunately, at both food hall locations, we can't control the music that's played, and its somewhat horrible in my opinion. Like super cringe worthy sometimes! One time I heard them laying an inspirational techno dance remix of "Blue Suede Shoes" by Elvis. That was probably the worst audio experience I have endured in this galaxy. For real, my earls almost decided to leave the planet forever and never come back.
In the prep kitchen and on the food truck, I play quite a variety of music. I listen to quite a lot of Hare Krishna kirtan recordings, but also a fair amount of drum n base, psytrance, psychedelic dub/ chill out, and ridiculous underground rap music. Once in a while some digital hardcore/ break core, depending on who I am working with, and their tolerance for intense and somewhat abrasive audio nectar.
Where else should we visit in your area?
Hangawi (vegan korean food), Taim (the holy grail of Israeli falafel), and NYC Pizza Suprema ( for killer vegan NY style slices)
Do you host any special events?
We do a thing where the president has to chug a bottle of shampoo and then go off a ramp on his rollerblades straight into the sun, while everyone else has a debonair disco Flashdance hustle
Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
My cookbook! It's called Street Vegan and is available at bookstores all over and on amazon. It's got loads of great recipes, and stories of our wild and adventurous food truck life!
