Bake some White Chocolate Chai Whoopie Pies with Higher Ground in Calgary, Alberta.

(Recipe courtesy of Tiny Tea Part.)

How did you get started?

Higher Ground was established in 1982 in the heart of the Kensington. It is an independent, family run, organic coffee and tea shop. The café has changed ownership only 3 times in the past 3 decades, and has grown to be one of Canada's largest cafes.

Where are you located?

Higher Ground is located in the heart of Kensington, known as the "Urban Village" and one of Calgary's oldest communities. Higher Ground is central to both the business and residential areas of Kensington and serves as a cultural hub for all of Calgary.

What are your specialities?

While we serve everything from coffee, traditional European style espresso beverages, tea, and smoothies, we also serve breakfast, soup, salads, sandwiches, and other comfort foods, such as mac'n'cheese and chili. Higher Ground is best known for our quirky Specialty Coffee menu, serving drinks such as the Banana Magic (steamed chocolate milk, banana flavouring, espresso, and chocolate whipped cream) or the Snow Dragon tea misto (Peppermint and green tea steeped in steamed milk, with a vanilla flavouring).

What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?

My personal favorite on our menu is the Café Calypso (espresso and steamed milk, with coconut flavouring and vanilla whipped cream).

What's on the stereo?

The music we play is an evolving eclectic variety. We try to mix is up frequently and play everything from folk, alternative rock, synth pop, and electro swing.

Where else should we visit in your area?

Kensington is full of many other independent businesses that shape the community. Notably is the Plaza theater which was built in 1935 and is located directly across the street from Higher Ground. We're also neighbours to Mañana Imports, which sells handcrafted folk art, crafts, jewellery and clothing from around the world.

Do you host any special events?

Currently we do not host any special events, however we have been working towards reinstating Open Mic nights to provide a venue for local musicians.

Is there anything else you'd like us to know?

Do you have a favorite cafe, restaurant or bar in your town that we should feature? Send us a message!
