    Begin with chain 2.

    Yarn over, insert hook into the first chain (the one furthest away from the hook), yarn over, and pull up a loop. You now have 3 loops on your hook.

    Yarn over, pull through 1 loop. This is actually creating the "chain" portion of your foundation row.

    This is a view of the bottom, and the arrow points to where you will be inserting your hook to begin the next stitch. The stitch that the arrow is pointing at is the "chain" portion of the foundation double crochet that was made in step 3.

    Yarn over and insert your hook into the "chain" on the bottom of the piece. Yarn over and pull up a loop.

    As you continue to work the foundation double crochet stitches, you will be beginning each one in the closest chain stitch to your hook. The arrow is indicating what the "chain" stitches will look like on the bottom of the piece.

    This is what a row of foundation double crochet looks like. You can make the length of this row as long as you need for the project that you will be beginning. To begin your next row, when the foundation row is finished, simply chain 2 and turn your work, if you are working back and forth. If you are working in rounds, you can bring your first and last stitches together, and join them at the top with a slip stitch.
