Bake Chai Spiced Shortbread in #ABiteToEat with Bloom Bake Shop in Middleton, Wisconsin.

How did you get started?

My family is from Louisiana, where folks are pretty obsessed with cooking and a great meal. I have been creating desserts since I was child. My father encouraged me to always experiment in the kitchen and was a big influence on my passion for fresh and local ingredients.

Where are you located?

We are located in downtown Middleton, WI just outside Madison.

What are your specialities?

At Bloom we focus on small American desserts. We like to say the desserts you might find in your Grandma’s kitchen: doughnuts, cookies, bars, pie, cake, buttermilk biscuits, whoopie pies, cupcakes and home made pop tarts. Everything we do is made from scratch, using local and organic ingredients. Half our bakery case everyday is vegan & gluten free.

What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?

Currently I am obsessed with our home made pop tarts. We use our flaky pastry crust and stuff them with local preserves like Quince & Apple’s Peach Chamomile. We bake them, glaze them and adorn them with happy sprinkles. They are pretty darn delicious, if I do say so myself!

What's on the stereo?

Music is pretty big and especially diverse in our bakery as we always tend to have a few musicians on staff. In the early morning, as we roll out the cinnamon roll dough, you might hear anything from Classic Rock, Folk, Fleetwood Mac, Feist to Ryan Adams. By the time the doors open at 7am, we might have moved to Johnny Cash, Prince, or local songwriters.

Where else should we visit in your area?

Madison has a pretty dynamic local food scene. You must attend the Dane County Farmer’s Market, one of the largest farmer’s market in the country, set against the backdrop of our state Capital. Notable restaurants include Graze, Forequarter, Marigold’s, Salvatore’s Tomato Pie..but, gosh there are so many more that equally amazing. You might need to come more than once! Other attractions include the Memorial Union for Babcock Ice Cream, the lakes and area trails for beautiful outdoor experiences as well Olbrich Gardens and the Madison Children’s Museum.

Do you host any special events?

A few times a year we host our Be Local evenings, where we invite our loyal customers and their friends to join us for an evening where we show off some of our local purveyors. There is a lot of sampling of desserts, drink and great community at these events.

Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
