How did you get started?
A self confessed fabric and craft addict, I moved from Portland Oregon, a DIY mecca, to Liverpool UK where I struggled to find any fabric, wool or haberdashery outside the city centre. When my son was born I wanted a way to balance work with being a mom. It made perfect sense to start a shop where I could supply beautiful fabrics, wool and quality haberdashery, teach people to sew, be able to make crafty goods and have my little boy with me every day.
Where are you located?
We're located in the leafy suburbs of South Liverpool, UK, on Smithdown Road.
Which products do you specialise in?
We specialise in boutique fabrics from Michael Miller, Liberty of London, Tilda, Robert Kauffman, Art Gallery and Cloud 9 Fabrics, organic cotton and cotton bamboo fabrics, fair trade mexican oil cloth and vintage dress fabrics.
Do you have a particular favorite product that you sell?
I love the Mexican oil cloths. They're perfect for bags, picnic mats, tablecloths and more. The company who manufactures them, Lee Carter and Co. is dedicated to improve the communities where the cloth is manufactured by building hospices and clean drinking water facilities. I love the bright colours and they make me feel a bit nostalgic as we always had them on our table when I was a child.
What's on the stereo?
My music taste stopped in the late 90's, so usually there's a mix of Neutral Milk Hotel, The National, Smog, Velvet Underground, Beastie Boys and Pavement playing in the background.
Where else should we visit in your area?
Liverpool has an incredible music and art scene. Within a 10 minute walk of the shop there are top restaurants like Neon Jamon, Spire, and the Tavern Company. Penny Lane is just around the corner, so is Sefton park where theres international music festivals, sporting events and food festivals. We're a quick bus ride from the Albert Docks with several incredible museums and Liverpool 1 with world class shopping.
Do you host any workshops, classes or special events?
We have a great selection of beginning sewing, knitting and crochet classes, school holiday crafts and dressmaking classes. Closer to Christmas we'll be hosting seasonal making events. Check out pennylanefabrics.co.uk for our class list and dates.
Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
Our goal at Penny Lane Fabrics is to get everybody to Shop, Create and Love. We want people to make friends with their sewing machine and make something amazing.
