Come behind the scenes at Oh Sew Much and tour Leanne's amazing sewing room in Alberta, Canada.
My favourite thing about my sewing room, besides all of the amazing fabric on the shelves, is the space I have to sew.
Tell us about your space
My sewing room takes up about a quarter of our basement - maybe 12 feet by 20 feet. Because we have a walkout basement, the sewing room is always full of daylight. While there is a television in the basement, I can usually sneak away and have some treasured time alone to sew. No one really uses the space but me. I teach sewing to children here as well. The big table lets me have 4 students with lots of elbow room for all. While I use the space for DIY projects, quilting is what I do here the most.
What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I have made it a priority to make everything in the space bright and light. Lots of white furniture, pictures of my family, art work done by my boys when they were young ... it all comes together to make a sweet space.
How do you keep organized?
Organization is a moving target for me. Some times the space is super organized and others it looks like a tornado went through. Because I share the space and there is no door to close if things get out of hand, I spend a little time each week just keeping it tidy. But I don't let a little mess deter me from creating and sewing so sometimes organization goes out the window.
Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
Baskets! Baskets! Baskets! And colour coding. I know that there are lots of people who like to keep things organized by collection or type of craft supply but I put things where they look good - I tend to keep it more organized and tidy if I like the way it looks but I haven't met a glass jar or basket that I didn't like or though I could use to organize with.
Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
My favourite possessions in my sewing room are the art work on display. Most of it was done by my two boys when they were in Primary school. Everything else is changeable - I think of my sewing room as one big canvas but the boys' art work always stays the same.
How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
My pinboard that is behind my computer holds a ton of ideas and inspiration. I often just print out a picture, grab some washi tape and tape an idea to the wall - it's harder to lose if it isn't tucked away somewhere.
Where do you look for inspiration?
I used to read a ton of blogs but my 100% go to inspiration every single day is Instagram. My phone is full of pictures I have taken of the people I follow on Instagram and their posts. I guess that is another way I keep track of my inspiration.
If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?
Oh, I've had my eye on a desk chair from Restoration Hardware so that would be wish number one. I would love for my husband to make me a design wall. I have this unused wall and would love to take some huge crown molding, paint it gold and make it into a frame with flannel in the middle. I'm talking huge - like 6 feet by 10" - completely ornate and a place for all the quilts I am working on. Oh, and lighting ... I have this idea for hanging bulbs on neon and bright cords. But really, if I never get any of those things, it would be ok, because my sewing room is awesomeness as it is and I am so lucky to have it.
