Sew a puzzle piece zipper pouch with JP Knit & Stitch in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

How did you get started?

JP Knit & Stitch was founded by Jennifer, Pat, and Genevieve, three lifelong crafters with different specialties and passions. This March, we celebrated our fourth anniversary (and in that time, our resident sewing expert Genevieve has learned to knit)!

Where are you located?

We're in Boston, in Jamaica Plain (on the south end of the Orange Line). JP is an awesome little neighborhood: you're in the city so there's lots going on and you can walk to most things, but there's also lots of nature and green spaces. The community is really diverse--everything from families that have lived here for decades to MassArt students--and it's always a blast to see people's projects and their passion for making things.

Which products do you specialise in?

We're a knitting and sewing shop, so we carry yarn, fabric (for quilting and for sewing apparel), and lots of books, patterns, tools, and notions. Since we can't carry everything, we carry the yarns and fabrics we're most excited about; that means everything from locally dyed yarns to yarn imported from Denmark, and our favorite prints from our favorite quilting cotton collections along with versatile apparel fabrics.

Do you have a particular favorite product that you sell?

It changes every day! We just started cutting and selling fat quarters, and it's so fun to go through the rainbow of fabrics and pick out our favorites. We're also very proud of the Blueprints for Sewing Cabin pattern. The designer also teaches for us, and we got to see her whole development process for this awesome sewing pattern (and have a party to celebrate).

What's on the stereo?

Usually The Noisettes, although during our anniversary sale we were playing Taylor Swift to keep energized!

Where else should we visit in your area?

Ooh! JP's Centre Street has a bunch of fantastic small businesses. For food, we're right across from Tres Gatos, which has a delicious, ever changing menu. We also get our cupcakes for events from Quisqueya Bakery which is next door. You can pick up JP souvenirs (and other treasures) at On Centre, stop in for yoga at Blissful Monkey, and grab ice cream and coffee at (the original) JP Licks. Be sure to take a walk around Jamaica Pond or the Arnold Arboretum for a bit of nature, too.

Do you host any workshops, classes or special events?

Absolutely! We hold beginning knitting, sewing, and crochet classes every month, along with workshops for all sorts of skills: sweater and sock knitting, quilting, apparel sewing, and even weaving, silkscreen, and needle felting. We're also gearing up for our weekly kids camps this summer.

Is there anything else you'd like us to know?

We really love being part JP. Our motto is that we are a yarn and fabric shop with a community soul. We are so glad that we get to be part of this community, and love seeing projects and skills develop, making friends, inspiring our crafters and being inspired. If you're in the neighborhood, we hope you'll stop by!
