This isn't the way I was taught to open jump rings and if you do it this way it's incredibly difficult to properly close them once their open. A better way to open them is to open them with a sideways twist using plyers so that the edges of the ring stay lined up and it is easier to close them again.

This is not a good way to open jump rings, you risk damaging the rings upon closing. Use 2 flat nose pliers and twist the ends, one away from you and the other towards you - not apart from each other. Please go to any commercial beading/jewelry website for free instructions. Just trying to help. MJ
