We head to Nottingham and learn how-to make an earring display and custom canvas shoes with Spinster's Emporium.

How did you get started?

Spinster's Emporium was started in 2007 by a friend of mine called Donna who wanted to create a shop where crafters could easily find good quality vintage materials. I was an intern for her after I graduated but eventually went off and did other things. In February 2013 Donna contacted me and asked if I wanted to take over and I said yes!

Where are you located?

I'm based in the vibrant city of Nottingham (my home town.) At the moment I have a little studio set up at home but I hope to have a proper workshop/shop set up in the city soon.

Which products do you specialise in?

I sell a range of vintage craft materials including fabric, buttons, trims, buckles and wallpaper.
I love sourcing vintage materials that have been hidden away and unloved for years so I can give them a new life. I never know what treasure I'm going to find next!

Do you have a particular favorite product that you sell?

It's so hard to choose! I love pattern and colours from all eras so my favourite will change on an hourly basis. However I always have a soft spot for the under appreciated and in my shop that seems to be buckles! They are just as beautiful and versatile as buttons but don't seem to get enough attention, and I have so many looking for new homes!

What's on the stereo?

Guy Garvey from Elbow on Desert Island Discs.

Where else should we visit in your area?

There are new places popping up everyday in Nottingham, especially in the Hockley area. It's like the Shoreditch of Nottingham! There are loads of independent businesses selling vintage, music, food and products by local designer/makers. The charity shops are amazing too! I would highly recommend Oxfam Vintage, Sue Ryder and The White Rose for craft and vintage goodies.

Do you host any workshops, classes or special events?

I take part in lots of markets and events in the area and do one off workshops as well. I love the kind of workshops where people can just drop in and have a go. You never know who will take part.
I use markets as a chance to sell stock that isn't suitable for the website. I have bags of fabric scraps and tins of buttons and that people can have a good rummage through.

Is there anything else you'd like us to know?

I have a few markets coming up in Nottingham in the next few months including Hearts and Crafts:

which is part of the huge Game City event.
And The Bird in Borrowed Feathers Winter Market:
