Craft Room Tours

Explore the craft rooms, studios & kitchens of crafters to see where they work and how they organise their supplies

We head to Maryland to explore the beautiful sewing room of textile designer Betz White.

"My 2 favorite things about the space are 1) the closets for storage and 2) the windows to the park behind our house."

Tell us about your space?
My studio space occupies a spare bedroom in my home. We live in central Maryland outside of Washington, DC. My studio is on the second floor and measures about 12' x 15'. The space doubles as a guest room and I have a pull-out couch for when we have company. Most times the couch is full of pillows and books. I don't share the space but it is very open and inviting for my kids to come in, flop on the couch and hang out with me. It's also my work space where I sew and design patterns for my sewing pattern line.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
The couch/pillows/coffee table makes a cozy place to sketch and day dream. Or nap! One wall is covered with my inspiration board for pinning up magazine swipes, swatches, print outs, etc. It hangs over my antique drawing table that was originally my husband's grandfather's drafting table.
How do you keep organized?
My closets are full of shelves with see-through fabric bins. I also have an antique armoire that I stash books and other stuff in.

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
I'm not the most organized person. I try to clean up after each big project and put things away so I can start fresh. About once a year I have a big purge and dig out the closet to get rid of things that are just taking up space.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
I have shelving over my computer area that displays things my kids made, some of my childhood toys and small felted objects that I've made. I have also started to collect vintage needlework so that will be filling my walls as well.

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
For current projects, I pin ideas up onto my inspiration board. I also sketch in a spiral bound sketchbook when I am brainstorming a new project.

Where do you look for inspiration?
The internet, the bookstore, the thrift store and just going on long walks to let the mind wander!

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?
I'd love to have a wood floor, a large cutting table for fabric and more windows!

We head all the way to Tokyo, Japan to tour Chie's stylish sewing and craft room.

"My favorite thing about that space was that it had a high ceiling and a lot of sun light. It faced South and had big windows, so it was nice to craft in a naturally well-lit place."

Tell us about your space?
I live in Japan. The pictures of my craft room were taken when I lived in outside of Tokyo. I recently moved to central Tokyo, but since my craft room is still in need of a lot of organization, I am showing you my old space.

My craft space was located in our master bedroom. The bedroom had a loft, where my husband and I slept. The other part was divided with my husband, so although these pictures don’t show it, the other half of the space was full of free weights, squat rack and all the other smelly sweaty stuff! So we slept, worked out and crafted in one room. The most crafts I do is sewing clothes for my clothing brand, Vivat Veritas. I draft patterns, hang pre-washed fabrics in the balcony of this room, iron and press, cut fabric and sew here. I even take pictures of the products in this room using the dress form and drapes.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
The newest addition to the room is my Juki industrial sewing machine, which I bought this January. It came with a solid table and although it is second-hand, it is beautiful and inspiring to me.

How do you keep organized?
It is hard for me to stay organized. I usually go unorganized for a month, and during sewing something, I get disgusted since I can’t find what I am looking for and start organizing. And I repeat the same in a month. With growing numbers of patterns, fabrics and notions, it is very hard to be on top of organizations! I bought the wall pockets from Ikea and organize some of my notions – all zippers in one pocket, buttons in the other. Since my craft space is small, I try to have my organizational space on my wall by using wall pockets and racks for threads.

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
I really am not good at this, but I’ve found deciding on a place for every tool or notions helped. After using the tools, they need to go back to the places that they belong to avoid clutter.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
I like to dress up my dress form with my latest creations.

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
I carry around a sketch book where I jot down some ideas and sketches of new designs. For some reasons, I find the physical sketch book much more inspiring than the iPhone notepad feature. I am also addicted to Pinterest.

Where do you look for inspiration?
I gather inspirations everywhere, but especially from people watching here in Tokyo. It is so interesting to see how different people dress depending on location. For instance, if you go to Shibuya, you see young people’s trendy fashion. Or go to Ginza or Roppongi for higher-end and delicate fashion.

I also love traveling and stopping at fabric shops or garment districts whenever I travel. Fabric motivates me. I love to feel and touch the fabric and come up with the best design that is suited for the fabric.

Since I moved to a new place, I browse a lot of interior design blogs and sites now. They are influencing the way I design too. I love eclectic interior designs, where you mix and match different textures, thrifted pieces and expensive art etc. I think the same can be incorporated into fashion design.

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?
1. Get rid of my husband’s workout goodies
2. Add more art and books
3.  Make me live in a fabric shop

We head to Pasadena in California to see Aurora Pringle's bright and colourful craftroom and studio.

"It’s so hard to choose my favourite thing about the room! Can we have a crazy plant-fueled MMA fight between all my favorites? Just kidding, I don’t want to be responsible for any knocked out teeth.  Part of the reason we selected our place was because of the potential of the guest room as a craft area. I think my heart will always belong to good light. This room has it. Between a lovely window that lets in natural light with gusto, to the wall sconces, to the two lamps on my drafting tables, I’m covered. Covered in beautiful light. Like every person striving to get the proper amount of  vitamin D should be."

Tell us about your space?
Pasadena, Ca, is where my craft room is, and it ain’t no joke! I’ve had craft spaces in many places (including a restroom floor in a house shared with other bananas gals), but in Pasadena, my craft room shares a city with the history of Albert Einstein, Sally Field, Julia Child, and Lance Ito. Perhaps my greatest accomplishment is managing to have a craft area in Pasadena. My craft room and I have been comfortably living in the City of Roses for two years.

Our craft room is a dedicated multi-purpose space, which is a fancy way of saying, “you can sleep in this room, but you’ll probably end up with glitter lodged in your belly button”.  Our place was built in the 1920’s, and the rooms are small and adorable. We keep the guest bed in here, but since my girlfriends are usually the ones who stay over, we don’t worry too much about keeping things crazy tidy. These girls are warriors and could probably weather rattlesnakes. Multiple rattlesnakes. We do not have rattlesnakes in the craft room. There is a closet attached to the craft room, where my handsome husband keeps his wardrobe. It’s very handsome in there.

This is also my studio, so to speak, so you could say this is where the action happens. I do crafts occasionally, but I’m an illustrator and portraiture artist, so that’s what I typically do in this room. I like to lay out all of my pencils and pens on my drafting table, cut my paper, and then get to work. My drafting table usually remains a mess until the piece is totally finished. I usually count that amount of time by how many episodes of Gossip Girl I can get through.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I’m a big believer in surrounding yourself with the things you love. In this way I am very much like Imelda Marcos. I love putting things my friends have worked on, up on my cork board. I like putting random finds up too—this can be anything from a print ad that has an amazing color scheme, or a piece by another artist that makes me think in a new, different way. I like being able to see what supplies I have to work with. Just seeing what I have around me can trigger uses for those things, and that gets me inspired.

How do you keep organized?
This is truly my Trojan Horse. I LOOK organized, and I strive to be organized, but I never truly in my soul feel organized. I try to have a place for everything. For the most part that works out, but there’s always about 25% of my stuff that is out on the basketball court making slam dunks and 3-pointers and getting injuries and Hall of Fame trophies. These things may never be contained, much like Dennis Rodman.

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
Be the Terminator of Stuff! Invite all your crafty friends over and tell them to bring their crafty supplies they don’t want. Trade up with them! Give all the extra stuff to someone who’s an elementary school teacher. I’m serious. If I don’t do this, I start turning into a woman who can’t open her overstuffed drawers. This is very inconvenient if you have a vision for something and are in the zone. You do not want to be in the position where you cannot open your drawers and you have a brilliant idea! Also: go to the thrift store and get tiny containers. Tiny containers are the best.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
My favorite possession is probably my drafting table. Tied for that would be one of my fine point black ink pens. I feel like they work hand in hand, with my own literal hands. I don’t have any of my own work on display, but I do keep a huge whiteboard full of my goals over my drawing area. So I sort of created that.

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
I’m actually pretty old school. I love to print things out and actually buy certain magazines each month. I have loads of notebooks that I have filled with clippings and drawings. My second greatest achievement (second only to having my craft room in Pasadena) is that I once filled a notebook with clippings of interviews, photos, and articles about my number one muse, Drew Barrymore, from ages 12-26. All of my notebooks since that one pale in comparison. I also use the internet like a cataloguing freak—you can find me on Pinterest and Tumblr. That’s where I put all my found inspiration from the internet.

Where do you look for inspiration?
If I’m running low on inspiration, then I probably haven’t been reading or socializing with my friends. So I’ll usually hit my neighborhood bookstore Vroman’s and get cozy for a few hours in the stacks, or I’ll email my girlfriends to get together and discuss what they are working on, what they’re into, what they’re obsessing on. I have been known to get into intense research mode, where I find something I like, and then I trace their influences, and then THEIR influences, like a less adorable version of the first Back to the Future movie. I only say less adorable, because Michael J. Fox was so adorable. SO SO CUTE!

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?
1. Shelves…shelves to the very top of high heaven! The potential of so many shelves makes me both giddy and afraid—I could put so much stuff up around the room…and also, I would accumulate so much stuff. Nobody said a wish had to be a good idea, that’s for sure.
2. My second wish would be to have a full time chef from my favorite sushi restaurant, Shojin, on duty, because I do love healthy snacks while I’m working my tookus off.
3. And my third wish would be to have Blair Waldorf on call as a real life friend (I would set up a special 1950’s vintage gold phone that would be a direct line to her place in New York), to motivate me to always look at the big picture, stick to what I want, and to tell me about her schemes when I need to laugh.

We head to Westerly, Rhode Island to explore the chic black & white sewing room of Karen from Sew Many Ways.

"My favorite thing about my sewing-craft room is the natural light from all the windows. My sewing room has been in so many different places in our home over years, like the basement and small closets, so the windows really make all the difference for me."

Tell us about your space?
We live in Westerly, Rhode Island and have been here for over 26 years. My sewing-craft room was a three season porch at the back of our home. It is located right off the family room, so I am still close to all the action that goes on in the house! The room is 12 feet by 25 feet with a full long wall of just windows. The room is all mine for sewing, crafting and my office and blogging work. However, I always have comfy chairs in there for my family to come in, sit for a while and visit. My sewing/craft room is where I do everything from quilting, sewing, painting, gluing, creating etc. You name it...if I do it...I do it in my craft room! I have the room broken down into areas. I have a crafting area, sewing, fabric cutting, gluing station, office area etc. This makes for better organization and less stress while trying to work and find things.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I think paint is the most important thing in my workspace. I have painted old pieces of furniture all the same color black. It helps to unify all the pieces, but it's also a great backdrop for all the things that I make in my space.

How do you keep organized?
Organizing is my main hobby. I love it so much, I wish I could make a living at it! I organize and label everything in my craft space and the whole house too...everything! If things are organized and have a "place", there is less stress and more time to create, because you're not spending valuable minutes searching for things. Having things organized makes it easier for me and the whole family.

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
I have used so many things to keep things neat and tidy. I've used galvanized buckets, plastic shoe boxes, cardboard boxes covered with fabric, painted coffee cans and wire baskets. Look past the obvious storage solutions that you can buy in the store and try to recycle things you already have. I little paint or fabric can unify anything and make your space sing.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
My favorite possessions are little things that no one would even look twice at. They are my mom's sewing tools...her thimble, a little wooden tracing wheel and a pincushion. Special memories of her that I wouldn't trade for anything. I do have a few quilts on display that were my first creations years ago. The first quilt I ever made was for my husband and the first quilt I hand quilted was for my mom.

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
Inspiration is everywhere, but I do keep them in 2 places. I tear out magazines pages and store them in plastic protector sheets in a three ring binder organized by category and of course who could live without Pinterest!!

Where do you look for inspiration?
I look for inspiration everywhere, but for me what inspires me to create something  or come up with new ideas is the "need" for it. What I mean by that is, finding the solution to a problem is what makes me think beyond the norm to find the answer. As the famous quote goes, "necessity is the mother of invention".

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?
I really couldn't wish for more in my space. It really is a dream come true. However, if I had to pick a couple things they would be...
1. Heat. I know that sounds crazy, but my room is a three season porch and there was never a heat source added to that room. I have to use a space heater in the winter!!
2. More pot lights in the ceiling. Although I have great natural light during the day, I wish I had a few more lights in the ceiling for when I work at night.

We head to Dorset to tour the cosy kitchen of Honeybun's baker Emma.

"I love having photos around me- and paintings/images with personal meaning- done by friends & family. There are loads of cushions, blankets- reindeer skin & sheepskin all very tactile."

Tell us about your space?
We have a shared Honeybuns office which is an old portable classroom – but done out with proper vintage finds. Including a royal shelf of old coronation mugs. This tends to be quite buzzy & high energy. I also work in an office- cum snug room in the house- painted deep red & lined with books & quirky bits & bobs inc a papier mache zebra’s head wearing fluorescent green head phones- our little boy loves it! There’s an old leather chesterfield in there, so instead of working alone people invariably snuggle up for a chat whilst I’m “working”. Our family kitchen doubles up as back up test kitchen- it’s in our house & is big enough for kitchen table & chairs but the work surfaces are limited. It doubles up as Honeybuns special meetings venue, family HQ, vino fuelled girls nights! Shared with the rest of the family, Matt & two little boys, Winnie & Lorne. I love the homely feel & that everything pretty much in it holds special meaning. The units were made from old Elm by a friend, pottery collected from flea markets or received as gifts, old tins collected over the years. In the kitchen it’s obvious baking & I then write recipes up & do business tasks- eg designing packaging etc in the office.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I love having photos around me- and paintings/images with personal meaning- done by friends & family. There are loads of cushions, blankets- reindeer skin & sheepskin all very tactile.

How do you keep organized?
I’m really messy- I’m very visual too- so large pinboards are a life saver- I whack any snippets/ cut outs on there. I tend to use real life pinboards more than on the computer.
I have “in tray” drawers in a little painted chest in the kitchen- out of sight out of mind! I can then dip in and out at leisure. If I’m faced with an overflowing intray on my desk I tend to get mental wheel spin. We’re lucky in that we have another test kitchen located in our Bee Shack Café- ingredients are stored in kilner jars, reclaimed enamel pots & canisters & terracotta vessels- all very higgledy pig. But it works.

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
Keeping bigger bins for larger amounts & decanting smaller amounts into kilner jars & popping them onto a-z labeled shelving- right by your work station or surface. I love having all spices, dried fruit, extracts, everything a-zeeeed & visible- this alone inspires me & reminds me of all the possibilities yet to be realized!

We also label all storage receptacles- never relying on memory. We aim to make everything look as attractive as possible- so we use old luggage tags or blackboard paint & chalk- this in itself is motivating- looking at aesthetically pleasing things each day.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
I love our collection of preloved, battered around the edges kitchen utensils- the ones with brightly coloured handles- we keep them stored coloured handles up in old earthen ware Somerset cider jugs. They look cheerful , add character & are a joy to use. The other thing would be our egg yolk coloured Aga in the house.

We have all of our past, present & future drafted marketing material- be it cakeboards, newsletters, gift wrap ribbon on a big pin board in the Honeybuns shared office. We also have a “brand beam” in the test kitchen/café- where we pop significant/happy photos of the team/awards/designs/news snippets. Otherwise they tend to stay stored unseen.

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
Pinboards. Aforementioned. Brand beam also.

Where do you look for inspiration?
Anywhere! Very often not in the food scene. We wish to be doing things that are genuinely unique rather than mimicking others in the same field. Mother nature does a grand job of inspiring us. Our Pippin Apple day fliers were v. much inspired by our community orchard.
Out running in the countryside- colours spring out, as do outlines & shapes. My little ones old vintage story books are also excellent feast for the eyes.

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?
1. Doors opening out straight into the garden/outside space
2. Space for a-z labeling & storage of everything
3. A lovely tream to drop by & have a chat with you in those too quiet moments.

Make sure to check out the Honeybuns website for delicious gluten-free baking »
We head up to Iceland today to go behind the scenes of Scrappalicious and see how Anna keeps her studio organized.

"I love colors and even though my furniture is mostly white/light I like to add a bit of spice with colors. And I do love to light a candle during the winter."

Tell us about your space?
My craft room is a reasonably sized room next to my living room. My craft room also functions as the family computer room so it is in use every single day. One of my fave parts (besides about having my own craft room) is the large window - it lets so much natural light in the room and I do love how cozy that is. I do all kinds of crafts in my studio - scrapbooking, card-making, altering and of course all the gift wrapping! ;o)

Is this also your work space?
This room is where I get crafty and it's also great to have all my work related things in this room.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I love colors and even though my furniture is mostly white/light I like to add a bit of spice with colors. And I do love to light a candle during the winter.

How do you keep organized?
I don't like to have things too messy when i am creating, I admit I tend to get a bit messy at times but I like to clean up between projects!

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
Ohh my word! My stash is ever growing but I keep it all in my room. IKEA is my go to store and I just love how many things you can find that aren't that expensive. I love the kitchen department because you can find lots of pretty things that work perfectly for storing all things crafty.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
My fave tool is my pink misting mat from Tattered Angels - it makes misting so mu more fun and is easy to clean! ;o) I have layouts up, some altered boxes and mini albums too.

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
I have two little notebooks where I write down ideas and store photos that inspire me.

Where do you look for inspiration?
The internet is an endless resource and I must admit I am a Pinterest-addict. Designer websites, magazines and just looking around your own home can give you so many ideas.

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream craft space?
Hhhmmmm ... I would love to have a table that I could stand and create, bigger room (I guess I can never have too much space) and a better lamp! :D

Make sure to check out Anna's blog for Scrappalicious  »

We go behind the scenes of Paperfashion and tour Katie's colorful office in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

"I try to create an environment that represents my art, which helps inspire my work daily. "

Tell us about your space?
I work out of my apartment, which isn't huge! I live in the city, so space is tight- but I dedicate a room in my apartment to my workspace. I don't share my space, but it does act as a living room when I have friends over. I love how much light it gets during the day!

Is this also your work space?
Yes, this is my main work spot!

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I've plastered the room with inspiration on the walls, and frequently hang my own work up as well. I try to create an environment that represents my art, which helps inspire my work daily.

How do you keep organized?
Since my space is small, it can get messy pretty quickly- but I try to keep my messes small, and reorganize throughout the day so I can stay sane and focused! I have a pretty large supply of glitter (since I use it quite a bit!). I store most of my supplies in drawers near my desk, and in a nearby closet. If things aren't easily accessibly, I'm less likely to use them- which is why I keep my best supplies right in my desk drawers.

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
Be organized. Keep certain supplies in the same spaces so you're never having to dig through things to find that one piece you need. Use drawer organizers!

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
My glitter collection for sure. I keep my pens and markers out on my desk so they are easily accessible.

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
I store most of my inspiration on pinterest- so there's no need to store or organize it at all! :) I find the computer and internet super convenient... rather than printing and storing magazine clippings which will easily become outdated or get lost in a pile.

Where do you look for inspiration?
Pinterest... or simply going outside and checking out nearby stores.

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream craft space?

We head to Werther in Germany to explore both of Brigitte's amazing craft and sewing spaces.

"My favorite thing about my craft space is my "inspiration wall". This wall contains clips of ideas, favorite objects, notes for future projects etc."

Tell us about your space?
My craft space is part of my home - actually I have two spaces. One is about 20 square meters and is used exclusively for my crafts, and the second one is slightly smaller and doubles up as a guest room. Unless guests are present I do not share the room with anyone. My favorite thing about my craft space is my "inspiration wall". This wall contains clips of ideas, favorite objects, notes for future projects etc.

Is this also your work space?
The  larger one of my two craft rooms is also my office where I take care of my customers, process mail, and prepare and receive shipping of my supplies and products. Beyond those two craft rooms I often use other parts of the house for my creations and in the summer I enjoy creating in the garden as well.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
My whole home is beautiful and cozy, because it is important to me that I feel inspired by all my surroundings. My craft rooms have been carefully painted and furnished with objects and colors that energize and motivate me. In general I do not like clutter, so plenty of storage and good shelving is a must, so that all craft items have a "home" to live in.

How do you keep organized?
I go through cycles of being messy and organized. When a new idea gets born there is usually some creative chaos. But once my ideas take shape and clarity,  my messiness gives way to order and organization. I keep my stash supply pretty lean and keep only those things at hand which I need for my current project. Once a project is finished, I let go of the supplies related to that project in order to make space for new ideas.

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
I prefer open shelving systems so I can see what I have at hand.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
I have a special custom made ruler which is exactly 1 m and 10 cm long. (A gift from my sweetie). This way I can measure fabrics in their entire width. My creations are everywhere!

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
I use evernote and online cloud.

Where do you look for inspiration?
At pinterest, flicker, and in magazines. But sometimes new ideas simply come to me as if "by accident" such as when my cat sat on my keyboard and produced a long line of commas which served as the inspiration to my Comma design line.

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream craft space?
I'd love to have a table with a "well" into which I could recess my sewing machine, the way my grandmother's old singer sewing machine could be stored in its little table top.

I'd love to have a really large cutting board so that I can spread fabric to its entire width.

And I wouldn't mind to have a cozy little couch for the occasional nap.

We go behind the scenes of The Perfect Pear, to take a tour of Lauren's work space in BC, Canada.

"Being a blogger, graphic designer and photographer its really important for me to have a work space that I love! A place that's full of things that inspire me and motivate me to be creative and build my business helps me stay fresh and stress free! I'd have to say my cork board full of little notes, magazine clippings and gorgeous pictures is definitely my favorite thing in the space! I love updating it with some of my graphic design work, and pretty pictures! "

Tell us about your space?
My studio/ work space is located in the tiny corner of my room! Its the perfect little corner for me to blog, do DIY's and plus it allows a lot of natural light in which is great for pictures! The walls are a light minty turquoise color and I thrifted a cute little table that I painted black that which sits next to my window; all the bright light really makes me happy!

Is this also your work space?
Yes, this is my work space and occasionally my craft space! I do most of the DIY's seen on my blog, The Perfect Pear in my craft space! The most recent crafts I've done are leather studded bracelets and some thin silver knuckle rings!

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I love bringing fresh flowers and foliage into my space, it makes it so much prettier to look at! :) The latest thing that I added is a cute little succulent in a seafoam green pot, I'm quite smitten with it!

How do you keep organized?
My desk is usually pretty clean, having jars and drawers with little compartments for papers and sticky notes really helps!

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
Jars! I love using jars to organized my supplies like scissors, pens and other crafty supplies like pliers and such! I love the rustic feel, but they're also really practical! The other tip I have is just to label things and have a definite place for everything and once you're done using it, put it away! If you have pretty ways of storing things, you'll be happy to clean things up and you'll like the way things look when its tidy!

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
My succulent, as weird as this sounds is probably my current favorite thing in my little space! I occasionally put some of my graphic design work on my cork board but for the most part there's not much of my work around, just the odd jewelry piece!

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
I have a ton of notebooks that have scribbles of ideas all over the place! I love looking back into the notebooks and being inspired all over again! I also use the tool Wunderlist online to help with ideas and to-do's, its been a real lifesaver and I don't how I got anything done without it!

Where do you look for inspiration?
Other bloggers, Pinterest of course, Dribbble and I also really like looking at Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie as well!

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream craft space?
I would move my space out of my room and into a bigger place, it would have gorgeous clean white walls with lots of storage space, a big computer monitor and maybe one of the walls would be a big chalk wall! I'd also love a hanging swing from the roof that I could take breaks and drink tea on! A girl can dream.

We take a tour of the bright and colorful craft space of our favorite food crocheter Twinkie Chan in San Francisco, California.

"I always knew I wanted my craft room to have yellow walls. I picked a yolk-y, extremely warm yellow with a lot of orangey-red undertones. I wanted my room to have a happy, sunshiny feeling."

Tell us about your space?
My craft space is the second bedroom in my house. It's upstairs and faces the street, and on a (rare) sunny day here, it's one of the brightest and warmest rooms. Sometimes when my BFF is spending the night, we blow up the air mattress and stick her in here amongst the yarn, but other than that, the space is pretty much solely for craft work and solely for me.

Is this also your work space?
This is also technically my office. My computer is in here, as well as my printer/scanner, my shipping supplies and thermal label printer. Now that my dream of having a separate craft room has come true, I would really love to at least have a separate table for boxing up orders and shipping! Even though my yarn lives in here, I don't do any crocheting in the craft room, since I don't have comfy seating. I do all my crocheting in the living room, parked in front of the TV!  I'll do all non-crochet work in here, such as, gluing hair accessories and brooches together, cutting felt for accents, gluing decorations to scarves and other crochet work, beading, photo editing, blogging, emailing, yarn ball winding, and sometimes I'll take photos in here for Etsy if the light is good that day.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I always knew I wanted my craft room to have yellow walls. I picked a yolk-y, extremely warm yellow with a lot of orangey-red undertones. I wanted my room to have a happy, sunshiny feeling. Aside from that, my supplies aka my yarn really provide inspiration to me. I just love the LOOK of yarn, and having my yarn wall is extremely delightful! It can be hard to keep my craft room looking tidy, because I'm so busy most of the time that I don't spend much energy re-organizing or re-decorating. I just let the supplies decorate the room for the most part. I collect a little plush here and there, but don't want to go too overboard. I've been trying to pick up colorful prints made by friends and fellow crafters here and there, but I'm so bad at getting frames for them!

How do you keep organized?
I recently mentioned on Twitter that it's kind of unfortunate that my crafting is such a messy job. I have to spend so much time cleaning up after my last project, in comparison to, say, a graphic designer who doesn't have to put all the yarn away, or a writer who doesn't have to pick up fabric scraps before starting a new project.  I have clutter around me constantly, but you really have to clean regularly before it gets too overwhelming! I have a lot of plastic bins to keep finished projects in. Works in progress are usually sprinkled all over the coffee table in the living room or on tables in the craft room. I am the kind of person who needs to SEE things to remember them, so if I hid the progress projects, I might forget to finish them! I have plans, though, to create curtains for some of my shelves and to hide things under tables. Plastic bins are helpful but a little unsightly! My supply stash is enormous, too enormous, and it's all here in the craft room. (Okay, that's a lie. I had to hide 3 ugly boxes of yarn in the hallway to take photos!) I have some spare shipping supplies down in my garage, but everything I use to create magic is shoved in shelves or tucked into a plastic bin in here. Yarn goes on the yarn wall, and other small supplies are in cute jars and containers on a pink shelf designed and built by my friend or in plastic drawers!

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
To be honest, I am not a very organized person! Or, I just don't choose to spend the time thinking about organization. I try to use plastic bins to separate the little things or get cute containers from places like Target or Daiso. I also have a little wooden card-catalogue-like storage solution for smaller supplies like jewelry findings and pom poms. Everyone asks me what kind of shelves I keep my yarn in, and they are CD shelves from IKEA. This is an easy and obvious tip: but it's crucial for everything to have a place. I experience a lot of anxiety over the fact that things never seem to have a place, so you need to try to create one!

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
- My ball winder and swift! I used to wind hanks of yarn with my knees and my hands. Having actual tools to do this has been a real time saver, and both were gifts, so that makes them extra special to me.
- My glue gun! I know glue guns get a really bad rap because they leave strings and the adhesive is allegedly not so great, but I love mine. I wish they invented a glue stick for the hot glue gun that was for clothing and washable! I want to glue gun everything!

If I plan to sell something, I try to tuck it away in a bin to keep the lint and dust off them. I have some craft duds that I'll never sell, and they usually end up being default display pieces, but I try not to have too much of my work hanging about. I'd rather they find homes with other people! I do hang the crochet-paintings on the wall until they are sold, though. I love how they make a space feel cozy.

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
I have a notebook for jotting down ideas, making small sketches, and taking pattern notes. This is separate from my notebook with the day's to-do lists and notes. I also keep a small notebook in my purse. You have to write down ideas before you forget them, because you WILL forget them! That's about the extent of my organization! My life is more like a collage than a filing cabinet.

Where do you look for inspiration?
I don't usually need to sit down and figure out how to be inspired. I usually have a backlog of ideas. What I lack is the time to execute everything! To be inspired to keep going and walk the walk, I like to read Elsie & Emma's blog, A Beautiful Mess. They seem to know how to make the most of their day. Observing others be productive inspires me to be productive!

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream craft space?
1. Separate shipping area
2. Comfy couch
3. A server to take my order for coffee and cupcakes
