  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Cut hook off of wire hanger leaving a 2-inch "stem". Using the pliers, bend stem over clockwise, and then counter-clockwise, creating an "s" shape in the wire.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Pull bottom angle of hanger downward, creating a diamond shape. Pinch bottom corner with pliers to reinforce.

  3. Step 3

Cut each piece of cardstock into a perfect square. You can make the squares of any size, but remember that your wire hanger structure must fit inside the lamp once the lamp is complete.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

Cut two slits into each piece of paper.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Curl the corners of the square inward and slide the slits into each other to create the cylinder shape. Repeat with all eight squares.

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

Glue each cylinder shape side-by-side until lamp shade is complete.

  7. Step 7

Place the light bulb and fixture in the hanger frame and secure the chord to the wire in the "s" shape.

  8. Step 8

Staple either side of the hanger frame to the top opening of the lamp.

I wanna make one, but I'm scared of fire! Anybody got any non-flammable adjustment ideas?

Hey everyone! Thanks for all of the positive feedback-- some people have voiced concerns about the lamps being flammable-- so here are some safety precautions: Don't use bulbs that exceed 60 watts. Be sure that the bulb is securely mounted on the wire frame (so that it's not touching or leaning against the paper. Keeping the lamp open on at least one end keeps the paper from trapping in head and potentially creating a fire hazard.
Happy (and careful) Crafting!

"Awesome! But wouldn't that be a firehazard? You know? Paper and Heat?"

In the spirit of earth day and just green living, Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs Give off far less heat and are an economical and safe choice to use with this project. :)

P.S. This is a cool project. :D
