Whale Pillow

  • Completed Project: Whale Pillow Picture #1

A cute narwhal pillow for kids or just for you!

Ever since I was a kid I've just been nuts about whales.
Kinda dorky I know. ^^
Anyways, I made a narwhal last may and I thought I'd finish the tutorial I'd been working on forever!

I'm making the instructions as clear as possible, but if you're having any trouble... contact me and I'll see if I can help.

NOTE:
I did everything on the sewing machinge except for some of the whipstitching...
I would not recommend doing this without one due to time and effort.
Also you may not need a whole bag of stuffing. I happened to have one. I got the fabric from around my house.

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

    First assemble your supplies.
I used a soft jersey fabric I had laying around but you can use anything soft.
Then take some tissue paper and cut out a whale shape to your liking.
Keep in mind of seam allowance on both your body and horn.
Pin it down on top of your folded over square of fabric.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Okay now that you have it all laid out cut out the piece. You should end up with two.
Now take your "horn fabric" and make your rectangle. Cut it out aswell. You should have 2 of this as well.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Now we're ready to start sewing!
I started from the tail but you can really start anywhere.

Start sewing the whale pieces together, right sides in and wrong sides out. Leave a hole in the middlish area of the head for the horn and stuffing. Make sure the hole is the right size for the horn to fit nice and snugly... this is crucial.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

Now let's work on the horn.
On the rectangle, sew a diagnal line, like I've shown you here.
If you have a fuzzy fabric like mine, make sure it is on the inside because you will turn it inside out.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Turn both sewn iteams inside out, and begin stuffing. Beans don't work well.
    Stuff the horn firmly.
The body should be firm espicially in the tail, but it should have some kinda squishy space so it's not awkward if you know what I mean... Does that make sense? XD

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

By now your Whale body should be stuffed, and his horn pleasently plump.

This is where I loose people sometimes.

Put the horn into the hole, and fold back the fabric a bit so it has a nice edge with the horn and the fabric of the hole. You might have to pin it and fiddle with it.
Take your time since this is crucial.

Basically you're gonna want to whipstich his horn on good and strong. I went around it twice for good measure.

  7. Step 7

    Step 7

You can add buttons for his little eyes or you can just sew some little thread eyes if this toy is for a baby.

    You're done!
Now dosn't he look ready to said the ocean blue with you?!
