smash up candles (easier to melt) and i used a fondu type thing to help melt the wax that i put into the pop can

take the melted wax (hold the can with oven mits, it gets really hot) and pour it onto the board, layering the wax to create the image you want

i painted the background, carved out a few things, and voila!
