Here is an example of re-using something that has passed its usefulness.
Often we assume if something is old and not needed it has to be sent to the dump. A little imagination can give old rubbish a new purpose and a new home – in this case, out of the fireplace and into the garden! Here is how we upcycled a grate basket into a garden container.

    Step 1

    Prepare the liner
Cut a piece of felt liner to fit the grate basket. Lay the liner over the grate, pushing it into the corners, and cut round the edges. Cut it slightly bigger than the grate, as it will drop down when you add the compost.

    Step 2

    Fill and plant
Fill the planter with general purpose compost and trim back any excess felt round the edges. Plant your herbs and water well. Don’t let the container dry out.

    Suggested herbs
Try a mixture of sage, thyme and dill, plus nasturtiums to give some
colour and to trail over the edges.

    Tip
If the container is shallow, keep it well watered. Add some water retaining
crystals to the compost to cut down on watering frequency.
