My mum taught me this when I was young so when I am bored I would fish out a tissue and start making this pretty flower!

    Pinch the end (not the end with the tissue opening)

    Tape the pinched end up with tape

    Since the tissue is 2-ply, separate each ply by pulling them apart

    Use your marker and draw the top of the carnation until is green or wad ever colour you are using.

    Tadaa! you're done with a white carnation! Follow the next steps for a coloured carnation

i made them too when i was a kidddo, like to see them again;-D
you can do the colouring too with some coloured inkt on a plate and additve the outside before you unfold the layers in the inkst not a long time, just a seccond and then let it dry, that will works quicker, you can do that with toiletpaper too for cheap garlands.;-D
