It's SEW easy!!!

I've had this 80's style thrifted sweater for a couple of months now. I decided to turn it into a vest.

This took me quite a while because the sweater I used had a ton of beads and stones on it. I had to remove them one at a time. Hopefully it won't take you as long as it took me.

For the sake of time, I'm going to give you the basic for the vest. You can embellish it however you want.

All seam allowances are 1/4"

  1. Step 1 1

Fold the sweater in half matching the sleeves.

If the sleeves are attached with a seam, cut along the seam to remove the sleeves. If not, draw out where the sleeves would start.

Carefully remove the sleeves and set them aside.

  2. Step 2 2

To prevent fraying, zig zag or serge over the raw edge.

  3. Step 3 3

Fold pin and sew the armscye

  4. Step 4 4

If the sweater you are using is a pull over like mine was, cut up the center front of the sweater.

Zig zag stitch or serge the raw edge to prevent fraying

  5. Step 5 5

    Let's make the belt...

Open one sleeve up and cut it into as many strips as possible.

Sew the strips end to end

    **Note**
Depending on your waist size, you may or may not need both sleeves.

  6. Step 6 6

Fold the strips right sides together and sew.

Turn the tube right side out

  7. Step 7 7

Center the seam and stitch down each side of your belt for a finished look.

  8. Step 8 8

Measure the length of the front of the vest

    With the other sleeve...

Cut into strips at least two inches wide. Sew end to end until you have one strip equal to the length of your sweater.
Do this twice so you have a strip for each side of your vest

  9. Step 9 9

Fold the strip in half so the wrong sides are together. Place the strip along the right side of the front of the vest line the raw edges up, pin, and sew.

Repeat this step on the other side.

Turn the vest wrong side out and stitch the seam allowance against the body of the vest. (I used a zig zag stitch to prevent fraying)

    And you're all done!!

    OR......

  10. Step 10 10

You can embellish your vest however you want. Maybe skip steps and 9 and add ruffles. It's all up to you. I'm sure you'll come up with something super fabulous.

If you have any questions, feel free to message me and I'll get back to you ASAP.
If you have any suggestions on how to make this better, send em' my way

    Now, go get started!!!^_^
