pocket sized too!
 <  Image 1 of 2  >

A natural remedy for cold sores that no one will notice.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. It's a good idea to sterilize your container before each use as bits of lint and such can get in while it sits in your pocket or purse. This can be done by boiling.

2. If you are sensitive to peppermint oil, it can be diluted with a carrier oil.

3. Never re-use the cotton swabs or put the used ones back in the container with the fresh ones.

4. Essential oils can warp some plastics. So if you use a plastic container, test it first.

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

    Gather your supplies.
I like to use peppermint oil for my cold sores because it completely removes the pain and smells nice. It also doesn't leave a white or greasy spot over the sore that draws attention like some other remedies.
I also chose the Altoids Smalls tin because no one would look twice at an Altoids tin that smells like peppermint!

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Cut the swabs in half so they fit in the tin. If you use a different container, you can skip this step if they fit as is.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Put about 2 drops of the peppermint oil on each tip of the swabs. (Do this just before you head out so the oil doesn't dry up on you.)

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

    Load them into your container.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Now when your cold sore begins to ache, sneak off to the restroom and press one of the swabs into your sore for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. This will leave your lip feeling refreshed, pain-free, and smelling minty. It also leaves a nice effect of making the sore shrink a tiny bit temporarily so you can feel less embarrassed about having it.
