Description

These little flowers make fun 3D embellishments for your handbags, clothing or whatever. They also use up little scraps. Here's how I make them.

Instructions

  1. Small 20527

Cut out 4 or 5 pieces of scrap fabric in loose squares, each one slightly bigger than the next.

  2. Small 20529

    Fold the fabric into quarters...

  3. Small 20531

    and cut a flower shape.

  4. Small 20532

It may come out a little wonky like the one shown. No worries , just trim it to a more pleasing shape.

  5. Small 20533

Continue cutting each layer, making them just slightly bigger and trimming to shape as you go.

  6. Small 20536

Once you have all your layers, lay the stacked flower onto the surface of the bag. Be careful that your petals do not overlap any seams.

  7. Small 20537

Put the machine needle on the center of the flower and sew through all layers in a star pattern as shown.

  8. Small 20538

Bunch and fold the bottom layer and sew as close as you can to the center in a circle. Perfection of the circle is not important. The stitching will be hidden by the layers. This causes the flower to stand off the surface of the bag.

  9. Small 20539

Repeat this on each layer, bunching and scrunching as you go.

  10. Small 20543

The back will look like this with multiple circles, one for each layer.

  11. Small 20544

Take it off the machine and rub the petals rapidly back and forth to start the fraying process. Your flower is now done.

  12. Small 20545

If you wish you can add some beads or buttons to the center as shown here. You can also add leaves in a similar fashion or use glass bead leaves.

  13. Small 20546

See the small glass bead leaves peaking out? The finished Thistle purse will be listed in my shop tomorrow. It needs a tag and some top stitching.
