Description

Skinny Jeans cost so much in the stores, why spend $$$ when you can make them yourself :P

I go to thirft stores/good will stores and buy jeans then just sew them up myself!

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

    Turn your jeans inside out then put them on.

    *click image to see full size

  2. Step 2

    Sit down, make sure your legs are flat and that the pants legs are straightened out.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

    Draw a line from the bottom of the pants leg to the thigh (I usually just go all the way up to the crotch area). What your doing is your drawing the line your going to sew on, so make sure it isn’t too close too your leg (so that its not too tight) or too far (so that it‘s not too loose). Make sure you can get your foot in and out of the pants hole too.

    *Click the image to see the full size.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

    It should look like something like this after you‘ve draw the line (just pretend the jeans in the pic are inside out :p)

    Once you’ve got your lines drawn, you can start sewing along them. One leg first, then the other.

  5. Step 5

    If your sewing by hand be sure to check (try them on) every now and then to see if they fit okay. If they don’t you’ll have to redraw your line and possibly start over.

  6. Step 6

    When you finish sewing up both pants legs try them on.

  7. Step 7

    If they fit then you can take some scissors and cut off the excess jeans.

    After cutting them: To keep the parts thats left from fraying, you can stich them up. (thanks tama_sempai!)

  8. Step 8

    Step 8

    Turn them back out. They should look something like this:

  9. Step 9

    Step 9

    YAY you made some skinny jeans! Now wear them!

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been answering you guys questions right away! :[
So I'll answer everyone now, the best that I can. :)

@Emily:
Well, there are needles that you can buy specifically for sewing jeans(I think they're called denim needles) so you can buy those, but I don't use anything special unless the fabric is tough.

@Sarah T.:
I think it really just depends on the denim. From my experience, I've found that it's muuuuch easier to sew on jeans that have a stretch to them. But I've sewn some that didn't and it was a little tough if I didn't have a good enough needle.

@Lady Pattern:
When hand sewing I use the double stitch.

So, I hope my answers are helpful lol. :D Thank you everyone for faving and commenting! <3

if you hand sew this, what stitch would you use?

Is it really difficult to hand sew through the denim?

Well, it depends on
1. How well(tight?) you sew the pants, like make sure the stitching isn't spaced too far apart.
2. What color thread you use.

The first few skinny jeans I ever made were hand sewn(and they weren't perfect lol), one being a pair of white jeans :D Luckily I had white thread though, so I guess it just blended in.

Okay question. I just did this to a pair of my black jeans and they turned out great :] I didn't use a sowing machine and you couldn't see where I hemmed it. I'm just wondering, if I hand sow on a pair of white pants will the thread show?

:]

AwesomeNESS! ;D I did it after a couple of tries! make SURE you sew all the way up to the crotch area, otherwise you will have a bump where you finished sewing (halfway up the leg).

So glad this project is on here because i have a bunch of bell-bottoms in the bottom of my closet lol!

Update: Okay, I'm a boy--rough and tumble boy who happens to like sewing. Anyway, I ripped the pants in several places because we started jumping around on coaches and whatnot... But I'm going to redo them with JEANS as they were intended. But I found out that you can use the skinnies as a stencil for the new jeans.

I tried it and as a novice it was sooo easy and fast! I messed up on the left leg (my foot wouldnt go all the way through because I have some big feet -eyeroll- but it took 55 mins (timed).

Tip:I found that it was good if I sat down and used pins to test the comfortability and I hope that others would think to do that because they could look great and feel great when you're standing but sitting could be a #&*@! if you arent thinking about these things :D

10 thumbs up! 5 stars!

awesome idea
just did them last night and my "new" jeans look great for the cost of pretty much $0!
one tip though, from my mum lol, when you cut off the excess jeans, in part 7, you might as well sow together the little excess flanges together using one of your special binding stitching patterns on your sowing machine, that way it makes the inside of your jeans more comfortable and will prevent those flanges from fraying
but other than that, thanks so much! i have new jeans!

Finally - buy for your own hips and waist and do the alter yourself. Even the skinny jeans in Canada aren't meant for size 12s!
