Need a quick animal costume? Just add ears to a hoodie.
Making these ears is really simple and fun. You can curve them various ways to make different types of ears (i.e. mouse, cat, hippo, dog). Big thanks to my little sister for modeling for me!

  • How to make an ear / horn. Shoulder Pad Animal Ears - Step 1
    Step 1

Begin by holding the first shoulder pad in both hands.

    Step 2

Fold the two ends of the shoulder pad to the middle.

    Step 3

Bring one side (doesn't matter which one) on top of the other side.

    Step 4

Lay the overlapped sides together and flatten with your fingers.

The amount of overlap will determine the shape of the ears so play around with the shape to get the animal you want (i.e. short and flat could be a hippo or mouse, long and skinny could be a cat, etc)

    Step 6

Secure the overlapped sides with straight pins.

    Step 7

Repeat steps 1 through 6 for the second shoulder pad.

    Step 8

Next, take each shoulder pad and use needle and thread to sew the overlapped sides together.

I used a different color (white)thread to show the sewing more clearly but using a similarly colored thread works best to hide your work.

Next, pin the sewn shoulder pad ears to a hooded sweatshirt and then sew the ears to the hood.

    You're done!

The shoulder pads I used were just loosely attached to the jacket they came from so I seam ripped them out. You can also buy packs of shoulder pads at some craft stores. Thanks so much for the comments!

@Paula B, you can just cut them out or use a seam ripper to take them out. I have done it before.
