Scratch & Sniff Xmas Tree Card - Pics and pdf inside! You provide the smell.
 <  Image 1 of 3  >

So, I finally figured out how to use the perfume magazine inserts in a craft project.

I've been wanting to create this Christmas card for years and I couldn't figure out how to make it "smell". I tried everything, but the design was always a little off.

Then it dawned on me I could paper punch the scents out of the magazine ads. Before you start, realize this is an oversized card. It's 8 1/2 x 11 (letter size) and the blank white rectangle, well that's for your personal message!

To begin print the pdf. I suggest printing it with a color printer and on card stock so it holds up, once you cut out the image.

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Next, rip out those ads, any perfume ad will do, but you want "unused" ads with flaps that haven't been opened!

  2. Step 1

    Step 1

Now, using a 1-inch circular paper punch, punch those babies out and by babies I mean circles. See where I'm punching, you want a little "flap" to remain, this keeps the circle sealed while you work and allows the receiver to "open" and release the scent themselves. It might take a little practice to get it just right.

  3. Step 2

    Step 2

Next, use a paint pen to cover the front side of the circle. You don't want to "open" the flap, so paint in a downward, one-way stroke. Allow the paint to dry. Notice the flap ;-)
By the way, acrylic paint doesn't like the magazine paper - so I suggest only using metallic paint pens.

  4. Step 3

    Step 3

Next, glue stick those puppies to card and press firmly.

  5. Step 4

    Step 4

Allow the glue to dry. It's at this point it can be shipped off to friends, family or whomever.

    Yeah, it's a 8 1/2 x 11-sized card, but it's so rockin' it's worth the extra postage!

There's a message telling the receiver what to do (cut, punch, lift, smell).
