I made this years ago with some help from grandma. I cut up a bunch of old jeans of various shades. Grandma help me sew them together and line it with the red material from her scrap pile. Then we used some of the edge of the jeans to make the handles.

Pick a material you like for the inside and sew the handles in between the denim and lining fabric. This way it looks neat on both sides and you can make it a reversible tote bag.
