• Step 1

  Main hat

  Using size US 5 (3.75 mm) needles and A, cast on 70 sts loosely.

  Step 4

  Making up and finishing

  Join front seam at neck using the flat-seam technique.

  Place two pieces for each spike together with RS facing outwards. Oversew two sides on each, leaving bottom edges open. Stuff spikes very lightly and then oversew lower edge. Oversew spikes in place along center back of head, so largest spike is at base by ribbed border, medium size is immediately above and smallest is at top.

  Fold ear pieces in half widthwise so RS face outward. Oversew side seams. Oversew lower seam so that back seam runs down center of ear. Stitch ears in place at top
  of hat so seams are uppermost and points of ears face inward; ears will then flop downward so seam is on underside.
