Instructions

  1. Small s6302551

Cut a large square scarf in half (try to be as precise as possible). This scarf was approx. 68 inches square (173 cm).

  2. Small s6302554

Sew the side seams of the skirt (the skinny ends of the rectangles) together. I choose to show the "wrong side" of the scarf fabric and leave the side seams pressed open on the outside.

  3. Small s6302599

Make a paper pattern for the waist band. Determine your approx. waist size (add for seam allowances) and choose a rectangle half that dimension long.

  4. Small s6302600

Fold the rectangle into 4 quadrants.

  5. Small s6302601

If you are choosing to do a wide waist band, taper the sides of the pattern at this point. (I didn't put enough of a taper and had to alter the waist band after I had it sewed together).

  6. Small s6302608

Cut out your waist band (two pieces, one for front and one for back) from any type of stretchy fabric. I used some wool jersey scraps, but old t-shirt material would also work well. Pin the two waist band pieces together, and sew up the side seams.

  7. Small s6302609

This is what you should have at this point.

  8. Small s6302610

Fold over the waist band and try it on (I had to do some taking in at this point). Make sure it fits well before you continue.

  9. Small s6302612

Gather the skirt portion and pin it to the waist band. Machine stitch it on. After this is complete your skirt should look like this.

  10. Small s6302614

Press over the remaining raw edge of waist band.

  11. Small s6302630

Fold over inside of waist band and slip stitch to to secure inside of skirt.

  12. Small s6302631

The finished skirt. I will do a few things differently, if I try this again. I don't like how the repeating band doesn't meet up precisely on the sides. Next time I will trim the band off the sides and just have a continuous band around the bottom. I chose not to hem the bottom of the skirt and just use the self fringing scarf edge. The skirt doesn't hang well. Part of the problem is that I'm slightly crooked, but it's partially an issue with the scarf itself. With a higher quality scarf, this might not be such a problem, but I'm not totally happy with it.
