last day of school upcycled from 3 T-shirts dress
My daughter wanted me to make her a dress for the last day of school, which she does every year. This year we used a large shirt we bought from her school when they had a logo wear sale. We headed to the thrift store to hopefully find close enough match for ruffles. and We did! PERFECT matches too. So how of three shirts we made her dress she is so stoked about! The shirts were only 1.50 each except her Prestwood shirt. but this can totally be done with any shirt. Just size it up right to fit.

  • How to sew a baby dress. Ruffle Dress - Step 1
    Step 1

Get your T-shirts you want to use. I used three for this dress.

    Step 2

for the ruffles of the dress, I used the bottom of the T-shirts, just cut how long you want your ruffles to be. Using the bottom of the skirt uses one less step in sewing. The hem is already done for you.

I cut all my pieces first before moving on to any things else. Who wants to start sewing and then go back to cut more out... just cut all and then you have everything there. Sew away.

  • Step 3

Ruffle the layers of cut shirt for your dress. I only used two because that is what my daughter requested. If I had it my way there would have been at least three layers of ruffles.

I normally use my machine to ruffle and gather for me, in this case I did the two basting stitch method. Sewing two basting stitch lines and then pulling the thread (do not back stitch on start or finish)this way its a controlled gathering process for me.

  • Step 4

I didn't both to cut the main shirt at all. I just sewed my layers of ruffled skirt pieces to the shirt how I wanted them.

Sew on your pieces in the order you want them. Make sure that the spacing is right, you don't want parts of your main shirt showing between layers. Or maybe you do. I did not in this case.

    Step 5

We went with a golden belt because well, my daughter is tall and skinny and dresses with no gather just hang on her wrong.

I snipped about a 3 inch tube from the golden shirt, and cut one side to make it a long piece. Then folded it over (right sides together), to make 1.5 inches wide and very long. Sewing up one side to make a long tube, but not sewing the ends, don't forget you need to turn it. Once I used my handy dandy tube turner outer (a large safety pin)I folded under the ends and sewed them shut.

Then making sure the ties would be even I sewed the "belt" onto just the front of the shirt leaving the ties to be pulled however tight you wish for.
