This nail design can be achieved either free hand or, for those with a slightly shakier hand, by using masking tape to block off areas on the nail.
The Reverse French is the signature nail design used by Ruffian (the design team comprised of Brian Wolk and Claude Morais)
1
Start with a freshly cut and shaped nail.
Apply a good base coat all over your nail.
This protects from staining, and helps the polish wear longer and helps prevent chipping.
I used OPI's Natural Nail Base Coat.
But just use the base coat of your preference.
If you don't have a base coat, use a clear polish to at least put a barrier between your natural nail and the colored polish.
ALLOW THIS TO DRY.
2
Apply the nail polish that will be your base color.
In this manicure I used Sally Hansen's Golden Nights.
In the other manicure pictured at the top the base color used was China Glaze's Passion. (this was a re-creation of the nail used by Ruffian in NYFW 2009)
I like to use a lighter color here and a darker color on top.
ALLOW THIS TO DRY.
3
Apply your second color.
Here I used Joe's Peacock.
In the Other manicure I used Rimmel's Black Satin.
APPLICATION: (free-hand)
apply the nail polish over the entire nail but ensure that there is a gap by your cuticle which reveals the color underneath.
It looks best if the gap follows the shape of your natural cuticle. - so adjust for each nail.
APPLICATION: (using tape)
IF YOU'RE USING MASKING TAPE MAKE SURE THE FIRST COLOR IS ABSOLUTELY COMPLETELY DRY BEFORE APPLYING THE TAPE. IF IT'S NOT COMPLETELY DRY, THE POLISH MAY BE LIFTED OFF WHEN YOU REMOVE THE TAPE.
Cut a piece of tape so one edge has the same curve as your cuticle. apply it to the cuticle side of your nail - covering the first color about 2-3mm (1/8")
Apply the second color over your entire nail. Ensure good coverage where the tape is applied to your nail.
Immediately remove the tape to reveal the finished design.
ALLOW THIS TO DRY.
4
Apply a top coat of your choice.
This helps protect your manicure from wear and tear and gives it a nice shine.
Here I used Revlon's Quick Dry Top Coat.
In the Other manicure I used Essie's Matte About You - which is why that manicure is not shiny.
ALLOW THIS TO DRY.
