This deceptively simple round cushion, made in timeless linen yarn and finished with natural horn buttons, uses a technique called short row shaping. Before completing a full row of stitches, you turn, wrap the end stitch and continue in the opposite direction, hence the term short row. Some designers hide the wraps made at each turning point, however, I love the effect they give and prefer to incorporate them into the design. Instructions

  1. To make the Round Cushion Front Cast on 44 sts. Work in stocking stitch – knit one row and purl one row alternately – and short rows as folls: Row 1 Knit to end. Row 2 Purl to end. Row 3 Knit 42 sts, wrap next stitch, turn. See Masterclass on short-row shaping, overleaf. Row 4 Purl to end. Row 5 Knit 40 sts, wrap next stitch, turn. Row 6 Purl to end. Cont working in short rows as set, leaving 2 sts more unworked on every knit row until there are no more sts to knit. This completes the first segment of the circle. Beg again with Row 1 and cont until 8 segments have been worked to form a full circle. Do not cast off sts, but join last segment to first segment by grafting one stitch from the needle with the corresponding stitch on the cast-on edge.

  2. Back Make exactly as for Front. To finish Weave in any loose yarn ends. Lay the work out flat and gently steam the finished pieces on the reverse. Join two pieces together around the curved edges using backstitch, leaving an opening for inserting the cushion pad. Insert the cushion pad and neatly sew the opening to close. Take a thread and gently gather together the small hole in the centre of both the Front and the Back. Sew a button to both the Front and the Back of the cushion at the same time, stitching through all the layers. Fasten securely.
