Flat cushion
This cushion is made of square patchwork block Roman stripes. Square consists of two triangles, one in dark colour, another one from stripes. This simple block could be arranged in many different ways. I love those with central symetry, but I was not able to use them, because dimension of cushion neede rectangle 3x5 squares and you cannot make central symmetry on such place.

  • Step 1

I cut stripes from yellow, orange and red solids (about 3,5-4 m/ 150 inch from each colour) . Stripes were 43mm (1,8inch) wide and then sewn together with seam allowance 6mm (0,25 inch).

    Step 2

Finished wide stripe were cut in angle 45° as picture shows. I have got right-angle triangles of two types. For my cushion I used only those triangles with small yellow corner and red stripe.

Then I cut triangles in dark blue. I needed 15 of them.

At the moment I have had a lot of triangles and I started to play with them to find best design. I found some very interesting ideas - you can see them in my flickr gallery - but most of them looks bettern on 4x4 arrangement and I had to make 3x5 squares.

  • Step 3

Some more of ¨blue fabric you need for borders. For borders I cut 4 stripes. Width were 4x width of finished border. Lentgh were a little bigger than bigger dimension of cushion.

Wrong side of cushion is made of blue fabric too.

    Step 4

Colourful and blue triangles were sewn together and then they formed rectangle.

Then I prepared 3 layers of batting a little bigger than finished top and joined together top, batting and blue backing. Quilting was made on machine, in outlines of squares.

  • Step 5

Last step was border. There could be used any of fabric from top, but I decided to use blue, because it nicely framed whole cushion without distracting from main pattern.
