A fleecy bed for rodents
 <  Image 1 of 2  >

I can't afford to keep buying hammocks for my 5 rats to chew, so I thought I'd try making my own....

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Make a template (I folded a square of paper, on the point, into 4 - so I ended up with a triangle, then used a plate as a guide and cut a semi circle out of the triangle base, unfolded it and got the shape in the pic) Draw round it onto the fabric and the fleece.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Cut out adding a 1cm seam allowance.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Pin RS together and stitch approx 1cm in, leaving one of the flat ends open (which has been chopped off my pic!)

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

Turn RS out, fold hem in and stitch up the opening.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Get your 4 metal rings, I used keyring rings, but D rings are great too.

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

Find the centre of the flat 'point' and stitch a ring to each one.

  7. Step 7

    Step 7

Et Voila, a cosy ratty/mousey/chinchilla-y/etc-y hammock.

Hi my mates got chinchillas do you think this would be suitable for them, also did you have to use any specific fabric, i'm worried about making them accidently poorly.

This is super cute though i love it. xx

Taz, if a chinchilla will sit in one it'll be fine :) Fabric-wise I'm sure they're like rats and will be fine with anything. You could always check on a chin forum. I used 100% cotton (pattern) and polyester fleece (it's actually a bed liner!, but seeing as the ratties like to chew I would spend too much money on fabrics - don't know if chins are chewers???

QFP... that hammock is for a friend, but I'll make another and take some pics of probably all 5 rats squished onto it ;D
