Re Painted Shoes

  • Completed Project:Re Painted Shoes Picture #1

Turn overtly cute footwear into something you might actually wear.
 <  Image 1 of 2  >

I had a pair of admittedly cute but not-me shoes. I also didn't want to study for AP's...what does that breed? Boredom! They might not look as good as the original, but I'd actually wear them, so it's all good.

Text on shoes (second picture) say, "Give me liberty...Or some doritos."

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Obtain a pair of shoes. Be cautioned: pick an old pair, something you never wore, or prepare for utter sadness if your hand slips and it looks like you knocked into a shelf at Michael's.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Cover the leathery surfaces or any appendages (pesky ribbons, tags) with blue tape and tuck out of the way. You can use any tape really but painter's tape is rather convenient for...painting.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

    Start to paint.

Feel triumphant because your precaution worked.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

Paint a base coat. You don't have to do this if you're painting directly onto the shoe.

Be careful in pesky detailed areas.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

    Your paint is dryinnnnggg.

Maybe while you wait, make a sandwich. Contemplate Tibetan Sovereignty. Wonder if Obama wears make-up.

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

Your paint is dry now. If the paint is still transparent, add a new layer; if you don't care (I think it looks cool here) then leave it.

  7. Step 7

    Step 7

Paint in details. Further accelerate your fervor for robotic design.

Wait for it to dry again. Repeat step 5.

  8. Step 8

    Step 8

Whip out the mod podge, and apply a coat. Don't be alarmed if things appear milky/white. It dries clear.

Once the first coat is dry, you can apply another if you're the cautious type.

  9. Step 9

    Step 9

Procrastination project complete. Now you have to do homework.

Did you use fabric paint or just normal paint?

I'm painting some shoes now and I've used two coats of purple fabric paint and the annoying check pattern underneath is still showing through. I dunno if that would work if it was normal paint

@ Knittin Kitten--I used regular acrylic paint...then to keep it from rubbing off I covered it with Mod Podge.
