Top hats seem to be a pretty hot trend, and I was inspired one day to figure out a way to make a miniature top hat out of recycled/unwanted things.
I love these hats because they're great as novelty hats and party favors or decorations.
1
Start off by cutting off the rim around one side of the ribbon spool.
2
On the opposite side, cut a hole in the center of the spool, leaving a 1/4 inch inner rim.
3
Paint over your entire spool with acrylic paint. You may need multiple coats of paint to completely cover any logos, stickers, or text on the top part of the spool.
4
Using hot glue, attach your ribbon the entire way around the bottom of the hat. If you're using very thin ribbon, skip the hot glue, and tie it in a knot. Very thin ribbon will stay on the hat best if it's wrapped around the bottom of the hat several times before you tie it.
5
Embellish your hat. Use hot glue to attach buttons to hide any overlapping of thicker ribbon. Also use hot glue to attach feathers and other embellishments.
6
Glue your comb onto the bottom of your hat on the opposite side of where you have the most embellishments. If you want to widen the brim of your hat using tulle or lace, use hot glue to apply it around the underside of the brim after you've glued on your comb.
Wait for all of the glue to cool, and then your hat is ready to be worn!
