Child's purse made from felt and recycled denim.
My daughter has a thing for the Wizard of Oz, and I thought she could use a rainbow...So I put together a simple little purse for her, with a rainbow pocket.

  • Step 1

Cut a length of fabric, in this case, denim from an old ripped skirt, in a rectangle. I used the bottom hem of the skirt as my top edge(the opening of the purse), so I wouldn't have to hem it. When deciding how much, fold it in half horizontally, leaving 1/2 inch - 1 inch seam allowance. If you are using a hot glue gun, now's the time to get it heating up.

  • Step 2

Cut a length of hem, seam, or waistband from your jeans or skirt, however long you'd like the strap to be.

  • Step 3

Fold your rectangle of denim into your purse shape, inside out(the part you want showing inside). Start gluing or sewing your hem. If you're gluing, draw a straight line with your glue gun, along the inside of your edges(sandwiching the glue between the open sides of the fabric). Do not, I REPEAT DO NOT glue the top edge, or your purse will not be a purse. It will be an unstuffed pillow.

  • Step 4

Flip your purse base right side out, and sew or glue the ends of your strap inside, each end on an opposite side. Set aside.

  • Step 5

Decide what image(in this case a rainbow) you want your pocket to be, and cut out pieces of felt to suit your liking. For mine, I made each 'bow' slightly smaller than the last, but with enough edge to put under the previous color, so they stuck to each other when glued. I cut out clouds, and glued them over the funky rough edges at the ends of the rainbow, then pink stars over the clouds. In the center, I glued a blue heart(Sofi's favorite color), followed by a plastic gem in the center of that. I glued the entire piece to a scrap piece of denim, then cut off the edges, showing only the design. I then glued the rainbow piece only along the edges(except the top edge) to the front of the purse. Ta DA!!
