Description

A nice flannel lap quilt.

Instructions

  1. Small 105626 2f2015 01 15 214616 2014 11 16%2b19.29.30

Make a pattern for your quilt. Here, the scribbly things represent the star-patterned flannel, the circles represent the dark blue flannel, and the triangles represent the grey chevron-patterned flannel. The quilt will be 5x6.

  2. Small 105626 2f2015 01 15 214911 2014 11 16%2b12.48.37

Cut your pieces. They should be 8 1/2 square inches each. This will take a pretty long time.

  3. Small 105626 2f2015 01 15 214958 2014 11 16%2b12.48.53

Take a square of backing, a square of batting, and a square of patterned flannel and lay them in a sandwich. The right sides of both the backing and pattern should face outwards.

  4. Small 105626 2f2015 01 15 215145 2014 11 16%2b12.49.29

Sew around each square, with a margin of about a half-inch. It's okay if it's not a perfectly even margin, though.

  5. Small 105626 2f2015 01 15 220038 2014 11 16%2b13.57.43

Sew the squares together, lined up with the patterned sides facing outwards. Sew them along the lines that you sewed each individual square on, and follow the pattern you drew up.

  6. Small 105626 2f2015 01 15 222536 2014 11 16%2b14.32.46

Sew them in one long strip until you have either 1/5 or 1/6 of your quilt (depending which direction you sewed). Repeat step 5 until you have sewn all the strips.

  7. Small 105626 2f2015 01 15 222724 2014 11 16%2b19.03.14

When you sew two strips together, make sure to sew the extra flat, like in the picture. This helps with cutting the fringe.

  8. Small 105626 2f2015 01 15 222858 2014 12 09%2b15.35.13

Now you have a quilt! The next step is to cut a fringe into the edges. Cut about 1/4 inches apart, and only cut in one direction at the join of 4 squares to prevent it from becoming lumpy. Then wash, and you're done!
