I created a light pencil line drawing on some calico, before putting another piece of calico behind that, then I placed it in a Machine embroidery hoop, running stitched in black over my line drawings, then I filled in block areas of colour with zig-zag stitch, before handstitching a few running stitches and crosses into it, and finishing off with a lace applique ruffle.
