After making this pendant, I need to replace my bike chain tool... ugh. It took forever to get this right (this was my third attempt). I used only outer links with the exception of a bearing/roller at the top of the pendant to allow for a cord. Using the bearing made it necessary to find some small washers to space the links at the top. It is impossible to just have space between links as the chain tool squeezes them together as tightly as possible. Also, getting the shape to be even took a lot of patience. I'm very pleased with how it turned out.
