Cute Alternative to the Traditional Santa Hat

Okay, so I was eating dinner and suddenly decided that I needed a santa hat.

a pink one.
with a bow.

so...i used scrap fabric that i had laying around (white flannel, pink knit, black woven cotton). i think it'd look better with pink velvet and white faux fur though.

to start it off, i used a piece of string to measure the circumference of my head, and went on from there. i improvised a lot along the way...pretty much used my sewing machine + glue gun to make it.

pretty easy (except for the round ball thing at the end. what a pain! i should've just bought a giant white furry pom-pom from the craft store and glued it on)!

i wish i had thought of this earlier so everyone could make their own in time for christmas. sorry. >_<

Instructions

  1. Step 1 1

cut out pattern pieces as shown. discard the "ball" piece if you want to just buy a pompom to glue on the end (MUCH easier)!

  2. Step 2 2

fold trim piece along dotted line. match the open edges to the bottom of the main hat piece and sew.

  3. Step 3 3

fold whole piece in half with the trim's sewn edges facing the inside. sew seam along open edge. leave small opening near the top for the pompom piece. turn whole thing inside out and fold bottom part outwards so that the trim's sewn edges are hidden by the band.

  4. Step 4 4

okay, this part is hard to explain. the pompom piece. i used a square piece of fabric, gathered the corners to the center, and sewed along the edges of the top to form a rounded cube. i turned it inside out, stuffed with fabric scraps, and gathered the ends together again and glued them to the inside of the opening of the main hat piece.

want an easier alternative? instead of leaving a small opening in the last step, sew the whole seam, turn the hat inside out, and just glue a giant furry white pompom to the top. there! done. simple as that. don't do what i did...try to make a round ball out of fabric. most difficult thing ever.

  5. Step 5 5

    bow:

fold along dotted line and sew edges, leaving a small opening. turn inside out and glue opening shut.

take smaller piece and fold into thirds. wrap around center of other piece and gather, creating a ring around the piece. glue ends of ring shut. trim any extra edges of ring.

  6. Step 6 6

    glue bow onto hat.

    and there you go!
    a cute santa hat!
