My first pattern.
It came to my attention one Sunday morning that the pencil and pen I usually carried in my bag to church were leaving marks inside of my bag. It was then that I decided that I needed a small pouch that I could use that would prevent the two writing utensils from ‘coloring’ the inside of my purse. I didn't want to buy a pouch when I could easily make one from the leftover yarn from another project. And thus the Pencil Clutch Pattern was created. It was a cheap, easy way to spare the inside of my purse from more pencil marks.

This pattern is the first I’ve written, so please be patient with me as I perfect this pattern. If you would like to point out something that needs improvement, please let me know.

CO 30 sts, work 32 rows in stockinette stitch.

  • Step 2

On row 33, knit 23 sts in a K1P1 rib pattern. Purl into the front and the back of the next purl stitch. Continue the pattern to the end of the row.

  • Step 3

Work row 34 in the rib pattern to the increased stitch and knit the increased stitch.
Continue the pattern to the end of the row.

  • Step 4

Work row 35 in the rib pattern to the increased stitch. To close the buttonhole, purl the increased stitches together. Continue the pattern to the end of the row.

  • Step 5

Knit in stockinette stitch or until pattern is desired length (mine was enough to fit a pencil in lengthwise). Bind off knitwise, and weave in ends.

  • Step 6

Fold piece in half with the bumpy side out and sew a seam on each end of the piece.Find the appropriate place for your button to be sewn before folding piece right side out.
