Inspired by Kate Spade!
Some fancy Kate Spade salt and pepper shakers inspired us to make our own, using really inexpensive white shakers and an oil-based Sharpie. Ours are just as cute and cost way less!

You Will Need

Step 1
Start with white porcelain salt and pepper shakers. Remove any rubber or plastic bits that may melt in the oven. Give the shakers a good wash and wipe them down with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue. Then try to avoid touching the surface as much as possible to prevent transferring oils from your fingers.

Step 2Paint your design with a Sharpie Oil-Based Medium Point Paint Marker. We chose to do polka dots on the pepper and stripes on the salt, using just black ink. However, you can make any pattern and use a lot of different colors.

Give your paint an hour or two to dry and then put your finished shakers in the oven on a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil. Set the oven to 425 degrees F. Once your oven has reached 425, set your timer to 30 minutes. You’ll want the shakers to warm up and cool down inside the oven, to prevent any drastic changes of temperature that could cause the porcelain to crack, so leave them inside for an hour or two after you turn off the heat. It smells weird, but it works.

Step 4Fill your shakers with salt and pepper and enjoy! The salt and pepper shakers can be gently hand-washed going forward (no dishwasher), and the colors shouldn’t fade.
