knit newborn baby hat / beanie
 <  Image 1 of 5  >

I created this pattern to make newborn hats to donate to my local Pregnancy Resource Center. They give out hand-knit hats, but so many of them are donated by old ladies who use boring colors, I thought it would be nice to do some that weren't pastel. They're fun to make because they're really quick and simple to knit, and you can amass a bunch of them in no time at all and feel very accomplished. They'd be a good baby shower gift, etc. I don't have step-by-step photos, but here is the pattern:

  1. Step 1

Cast on 64 stitches. Divide stitches so that there are 22 on two of the needles and 20 on the third needle. Join.

  2. Step 2

Work in 2x2 ribbing (k2, p2) for 19 rows. Just put in any stripes or color changes within those 19 rows. Begin decreases.

  3. Step 3

    Row 20: k2, p2, k2, p2tog around
(you should now have 56 sts)

    Row 21: k2, p2tog, k2, p1 around
    (48 sts)

    Row 22: k2, p1, k2tog, p1 around
    (40 sts)

    Row 23: k2tog, p1, k1, p1 around
    (32 sts)

    Row 24: k2tog around
    (16 sts)

    Row 25: k2tog around again
    (8 sts)

  4. Step 4

Break yarn & draw the tail through the remaining sts, pull tight and weave in all ends.

    Done :)
