I used some vintage fabric on the outside and inside, then just finished off the outside with red blanket stitch in embroidery thread. I then added a red wheel and an anchor to the zipper with a jump ring, and voila!

I had to do this all by hand, without my sewing machine as in the year or so since I last used it I've almost completely forgotten everything I knew. Boo.
