An easy and inexpensive way to make your own felt or flannel board set. Great for educational storytelling.
Materials needed: * Felt or Flannel material in your choice of color 1-inch larger on all sides of your board. One yard should be more than enough for this project. Darker backgrounds make felt pieces stand out. Blue (sky) or Green (grass) also work well. * Board in the size you would like your completed felt/flannel board to be. There are several options for material choices: Option 1: Corrugated cardboard. A single piece of cardboard from a large appliance box is nice and rigid and works great. Option 2: Two pieces of the same size from regular cardboard like a packing box or 3 fold science display boards from your local craft store. Make sure and glue the 2 pieces together. Option 3: Foam Core Board - a lot of companies use this for signs. It comes in 20 x 30 inches and 3/16 inch up to 1/2 inch thick. Sometimes you can find it in self adhesive form. We used the 20 x 30 size for the project here. Option 4: Plywood. If you have a light weight piece of plywood laying around that would work too. Just be sure to sand it very well especially around the edges and corners. You don't want any splinters. Duct tape or Glue (tacky or glue gun). Scissors.
Choose the size of your felt/flannel board and cut it to that size. The larger the better. We used foam core board as it is light weight, sturdy and the 20x30 size is perfect for classroom use. Lay out your piece of felt or flannel material on a flat surface and smooth out any wrinkles.
place your board in the center of the fabric. You want a one inch overhang around the entire board. Measure the one inch and mark for cutting.
Cut the felt on markings. Place your board on top of the cut felt.
Next cut off some of the fabric from each of the corners so when you fold it over, you dont have too much excess fabric. To do this you cut the corners of the fabric at an angle.

On one side, wrap the end of the fabric tightly over the back of the board and secure with glue or tape. We used duct tape that way when the material gets worn or dirty it can easily be removed and washed or replaced. If using glue for best results place pressure on the fabric as it dries and let the board sit until the glue is completely dried.
Here is the completed step with the felt material folded over the board and secured with duct tape.
Next choose the opposite side and again wrap the end of the fabric tightly over the back of the board smoothing out any wrinkles on the front as you pull. Adhere the felt with your chosen method. Repeat with the other two sides.
For the corners peel back a little bit of the tape and tuck the corner in and re-tape.
Now your homemade felt/flannel board is completed.
