Turn a pair of doors or a bare wall into a magical bookcase mural!
 <  Image 1 of 4  >

I painted this bookcase mural for my daughter's Harry Potter themed room.

  1. Step 1

Use semi-gloss paint and paint roller to paint the taped-off area. Paint a second coat if necessary. Allow to dry overnight.

  2. Step 2

Print the template on the clear acetate and project the image onto the selected area. Position the bookcase where you’d like for it to appear. Use masking tape to outline the area.

(note: if you want a more personalized bookcase, you can freehand and not use the projector)

  3. Step 3

Using a pencil or chalk, trace the bookcase (not the contents), adding a border if needed.

  4. Step 4

Paint bookcase shelves and allow to dry.

  5. Step 5

Starting with the top shelf, trace contents.

  6. Step 6

Paint contents with the acrylic craft paints and brushes using your color choices.

  7. Step 7

Repeat for all shelves, allow to dry overnight.

  8. Step 8

    Step 8

Using a variety of permanent markers or paint, add book names of your choice.

I used titles that are mentioned in the Harry Potter series. There is a complete list on the Harry Potter Lexicon.

Note: If using HP book titles, the Standard Book of Spells texts are the seven together on the second shelf from the top, on the right side.

  9. Step 9

    Step 9

Add embellishments; names on potions bottles, cat whiskers, etc. with permanent markers.

Wow! What a great idea! You did a beautiful job. Books are such a wonderful thing to have in life anyway and this is a great reminder to see every day!

Thanks! My daughter loves it, and if we ever move, I'm taking those closet doors with us!

Do it now, if it makes you happy! I've been itching to do another one, but I've pretty much decorated every inch of the house at this point...
