Loteria Cross

  • Completed Project: Loteria Cross Picture #1

Paint and decorating a Loteria Cross to put on your wall.

NOTE: The process for this cross could work on a small table, too!
You might be looking at this and wondering ‘what happened here’? I like mixing patterns and colors a lot. I like what happens when many different elements come together and start to make sense. I also really like crosses that have a Mexican flair!

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Cut out your cross from the plywood and sand so it’s a nice smooth finish

  2. Step 2

Divide your cross into sections like you see in the photo. (The sections will each be painted differently)

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Using your blue tape and some newspaper, cover up the cross except for one section and spray it with a color to make it solid.

  4. Step 4

Wait a few minutes for it to dry and repeat until all of the sections are painted a different color.

  5. Step 5

With your tape and newspaper, section off one of your painted squares and lay the nylon athletic fabric over it like a stencil and spray with a contrasting color.

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

Wait one minute and remove the fabric to reveal your pattern

  7. Step 7

Do this in all the sections except the middle section. In the middle section, use some lace to break up the pattern on the cross and add some interest.

DON’T WORRY: If you don’t like your color combinations, you can always spray over it and start again!

  8. Step 8

    Step 8

When your cross is dry, you will glue on your loteria cards in each section.

  9. Step 9

With your dark blue paint, do a decorative scallop all the way around the cross and in between the sections that you’ve painted.

  10. Step 10

After this dries, dot the light blue in between the scallops

  11. Step 11

Take your forest green paint and dot around your loteria cards and paint small leaves around the cross.

  12. Step 12

Spray with the Krylon Acrylic Clear Coat to give it a nice protected finish.
