Keep your health bar full, on a rustic wooden headboard
We couldn't decide between a rustic wooden headboard or a geeky Zelda-inspired headboard. So we went with both!

You do need a jigsaw for this project (around $30), which is one of our favorite small tools since we do so many 8-bit designs.

  • How to make a bed headboard. Legend Of Zelda 8 Bit Heart Headboard - Step 1
    Step 1

To cut out 8-bit hearts, you can draw your design onto graph paper, cut it out, then trace it onto a piece of wood. Alternatively, you could use a ruler to draw a graph directly onto the wood, then outline your design there. We usually go with the second method.

Once you like your pattern, carefully cut it out with a jigsaw. Which is very easy once you get the hang of it.

Paint the hearts red. Once the red is dry, use painters tape to mask around the area that you want to paint black. After painting the black section, remove the tape. Use the same process if you would like a white highlight square.

While the hearts are drying, stain the boards that you will be using as your headboard. We used 5' long boards, to fit a queen sized bed.

After you're done painting all of the hearts, screw them onto one of the headboard boards.

Attach the boards directly to the wall, by screwing them into studs. We live in a rental house so will be sure to patch those holes before we leave!
