So I've always wanted a cowl, and finally got my act together and knitted one. Think it went well, whether or not it'll keep me warm, we shall see.

I did it using a ribbed stitch pattern, with 44 cast on stitches measuring to 16" long. Then I sewed them together leaving 5" open to add the buttons. One can use circular needles, but I haven't mastered that yet. In time, in time.
